Chile adds 11m acres to the national parks to preserve Patagonia


The Chilean government has agreed to pledge an additional 10 million acres on top of  the Tompkins Foundation one million acre donation. This expansion will create five brand new national parks and add acreage to other parks, creating what is called the “Route of Parks” running North-South along Chile.

The late Doug Tompkins, who died in a kayak accident in December 2015, and wife Kristine McDivitt Tompkins, are well known as wildlands philanthropists. Kristine McDivitt Tompkins states “this is unprecedented and will become one of the most famous routes in the world, connecting up communities and bringing new economic activity to each region.”
