Tanzania offers incredible safari experiences year-round. The best time to visit depends on what you want to experience, but the dry season from June to October is generally considered the best for wildlife viewing. During this time, vegetation is thinner and animals gather around water sources, making them easier to spot, while the cooler, dry weather creates ideal safari conditions. If you’re hoping to witness the Great Migration, the timing varies throughout the year, with the dramatic river crossings typically occurring between July and October, and the wildebeest calving season taking place in the southern Serengeti from January to March.

A Tanzania safari offers some of the most spectacular wildlife viewing in Africa. You can expect to see the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino), along with cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, hyenas, wildebeest, warthogs, antelope and hundreds of bird species including flamingos. Australian passport holders require a visa to enter Tanzania, which costs USD $50, lasts up to 90 days, and requires a passport with 6 months validity, easily obtainable online via the official eVisa portal before departure. If your itinerary includes Zanzibar, you’ll also need to purchase mandatory inbound travel insurance through the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation before arrival.
