I just love expedition travel to beautiful and remote places and I’m excited to share highlights from my recent expedition through Greenland and Iceland. This journey was nothing short of extraordinary, blending the awe of remote wilderness, rich cultural encounters, and an unparalleled expedition experience onboard the Ultramarine, a vessel that I’d highly recommend to anyone dreaming of an Arctic or Antarctic adventure.
I went in September- as that gave me a good chance of having enough daylight hours to enjoy the region- but also a chance to get dark enough to possibly experience the Northern Lights. I was able to see them multiple times over 2 and a half weeks.
Greenland: Sail & Soar
Greenland, sometimes overshadowed by other polar destinations, captivated me with its untouched landscapes and the unique insights it offers into human history and resilience. While it might not be known for the abundance of wildlife found in places like Svalbard (known as the “wildlife capital of the Arctic”), Greenland’s remote charm and cultural richness offer something truly special.
My expedition focused on the southern part of Greenland, a region known for its breathtaking fjords and ice formations. One of the standout aspects of Greenland was the chance to visit remote communities, where we were warmly welcomed by the locals. These encounters brought a personal dimension to the journey—whether it was watching a local rock band perform, playing soccer with children in the village, or enjoying an evening of music onboard with a talented Greenlandic musician.
The Ultramarine: Elevating Polar Exploration
Traveling on the Ultramarine enhanced every part of the journey. This state-of-the-art ship, equipped with two helicopters, opened up unique ways to explore the landscape. Thanks to these helicopters, we were able to embark on flight-seeing excursions over Greenland’s rugged terrain, landing on high peaks with views that will stay with me forever. One of the most memorable moments was touching down on the Greenland ice sheet, a vast expanse that covers 80% of the island, offering a humbling view of the Arctic’s grandeur- and a one-in-a-lifetime experience!
The ship’s crew deserves special recognition as some of the knowledgeable teams that I have had the pleasure to experience in Polar travel. From experienced helicopter pilots with captivating stories to passionate expedition staff, every member contributed to making this journey exceptional. Their knowledge, enthusiasm, and dedication made each day memorable, whether I was kayaking among icebergs or hearing insights into Arctic geology and ecology. Waking up to soft Greenland music each morning was so special as you opened your eyes to the vast Arctic wilderness you could see from your bed.
Iceland: Geothermal Wonders and Natural Beauty
Many expeditions to Greenland begin in Iceland, so I took the opportunity to explore this destination beforehand- as I had never been before. While Iceland has been getting increasingly popular and well-trodden, it remains one of the most magical places I’ve ever visited. Outside of Reykjavik, Iceland’s landscapes offer an otherworldly experience: watching the Northern Lights dance across the sky, trekking behind waterfalls, and soaking in natural hot springs- I’ve never felt so rejuvenated- or clean! One of the most refreshing moments was snorkeling between the American and European tectonic plates in icy water, protected by a dry suit but still icy-fresh!—a rare opportunity to literally swim between continents.
Why Greenland and Iceland Should Be on Your List
For those considering polar travel, Greenland and Iceland each offer unique draws. Greenland’s cultural richness, combined with its vast landscapes, creates a journey like no other. If you’re intrigued by human history, from Inuit culture to Viking exploration, Greenland’s remote communities will welcome you with open arms.
Iceland, meanwhile, is perfect for travelers seeking a sense of wonder in nature, with its geothermal wonders, breathtaking hikes, and opportunities to learn about the earth’s geological forces.
