On today’s excursion we will spend half a day exploring the historical and modern sights of Santiago de Chile. We will start our trip at the main avenue Alameda Bernardo O’Higgins by visiting La Moneda, the Government Palace, where we will learn of its historical and current significance. Following this, we will enjoy a walk through the pedestrian streets of Huérfanos and Ahumada, where the main commercial activity of the city is concentrated. Afterwards, we will visit the famous main square of the city called Plaza de Armas, which is surrounded by the Metropolitan Cathedral and other historical buildings. We will continue visiting the Santa Lucia Hill, the mount upon which the Spanish founded Santiago in 1541. It is a lone steep rock, with many plants and an antique building rising steeply from the city below. Later, we will cross the Mapocho River to get to Bellavista, the cultural and artistic neighborhood of Santiago. Bellavista lies at the foot of the San Cristóbal Hill, the highest in town, in the middle of the Metropolitan Park. We will go up the hill to explore the surroundings while enjoying beautiful panoramic views of the city. Finally, we will visit Providencia, known for its excellent restaurants, elegant shops and modern high-rise buildings.
This morning you will be transferred to Santiago Airport to catch your flight to Temuco. On arrival you will be met and transferred to Pucon. On today's excursion we will have the exclusive opportunity to sit down with a Mapuche family and share in their traditions and their rakizuam (way of thinking). From Pucón or its surroundings we will travel to their ruka (traditional straw house) where we will be welcomed as their witran (visitors). We will talk about their philosophies of life while learning of their traditional clothing, ceremonial music instruments and common household artifacts. Afterwards we will assist in the preparation of a typical meal, cooking over an open fire. After this fulfilling and special encounter it will be time to say peukayal (farewell, until we see each other again).
Today we will enjoy lunch at our hotel before the viewing of the Eclipse.
Today’s excursion will lead us into the Huerquehue National Park, located only 35 km from Pucón. Founded in 1967, this is one of the oldest protected areas of Chile and covers around 12,500 hectares. Several hundred years ago, this area was home to important trade routes, which is why the park was dubbed “Place of Messengers” in the indigenous Mapudungun language. Nowadays hikers can enjoy scenic landscapes, millennial forests, lakes, lagoons and various waterfalls. This excursion will take us along the main path of the park known as Los Lagos Trail for a medium difficulty hike over a few slopes. Along the way we can spot a wide diversity of fauna and flora. After many breathtaking moments and appreciating our surroundings rich in history we will go back to Pucon. On the way we will stop at the Huife Hot Spring, surrounded by 300 hectares of native forests, lush vegetation and several waterfalls. These open air thermal baths are the perfect place to take-in the peace and quiet of the Araucanía Region. We will have the opportunity to enjoy nature while relaxing in the pools, each of them ranging in temperatures between 30°C and 40°C+. If we need a little change, we can also try out the crystal clear waters of the Liucura River, situated right next to us.
Today a transfer will take us to Puerto Varas. Before arriving, we will head towards the Vicente Perez Rosales National Park. Along the way we will make a variety of small stops including Mirador Los Riscos (a beautiful lookout point featuring the Osorno Volcano) and Mirador Onces Bellavista (a nice spot to observe llamas, deer and emus). Once inside the park we will pass a lagoon home to the famous Torrent duck and then continue on to the Petrohue River and the Petrohue Waterfalls. There we will take time to explore our surroundings. Afterwards we will continue a little further up the path and arrive to the Todos Los Santos Lake where will take a 30 minute boat ride across the emerald water. We will then board our vehicle for a 40 minute drive to reach the famous Osorno Volcano. Once there we will take a small trek to a lookout point where we can admire Llanquihue Lake and its surroundings from a distance. A few steps further will lead us to the notable Burbuja Crater and a little further up the volcano we will be able to appreciate the Rojo Crater, both impressive and remarkable. To reach the red crater we reach the base of the ski center approximately 1200 meters high and from here we begin our one hour, uphill hike to reach the wonderful view towards the volcano of Lake Llanquihue. A box lunch will be served en route.
Breakfast and Lunch included.
You will be transferred from Puerto Varas to Puerto Montt Airport this morning to catch your flight to Punta Arenas. From here you will be transferred to your accommodation in Puerto Natales.
At 7.30am you will be transferred to Puerto Bories from the office (Eberhard 560), where you will sail through the Ultima Esperanza Fiord to the Balmaceda and Serrano Glaciers. There are beautiful views of mountains, waterfalls, cattle ranches and Patagonian birds along the way. You will return back to Puerto Natales at approximately 2pm.
Today you will be picked up from Puerto Natales and begin the tour visiting the Mylodón Cave, located about 30 minutes away from the town. This cave was discovered by a German explorer in 1895. After visiting this natural monument, we will continue toward the Village of Cerro Castillo, heart of the sheep farming business in the area. As we continue on the road we will spot the mountains of the Paine Massif (if the weather is favourable) including the famous Torres del Paine and the spectacular Cuernos del Paine. Before reaching the entrance of the park we will be able to see the Sarmiento Lake and the Amarga Lagoon. This is also the best place to observe the wild life of the park in big numbers and close to the road. Later, we will move on to the central area of the park to enjoy views of the Nördenskjold and Pehoe lakes. In this area we will also be able to enjoy magnificent views of the Salto Grande waterfall. Afterwards, we will take a break and have lunch before hiking for about an hour to reach the Grey Lake. Here we will be witness to the many icebergs from the Grey Glacier, evidence of the last ice age here in Patagonia. After visiting this area we will drive back to the town and return to the hotel.
This morning you will be transferred from your accommodation to Punta Arenas or Puerto Natales airports for your onward travels. Alternatively, you can choose to continue your holiday with a visit to El Calafate and Perito Moreno Glacier (not included).
